Well, Just a day late deciding! Looks like the Big Red upgrades are out of stock as I couldn't find on website. I will be in as well as soon as they are back in stock.

  ;)

Had to change that emoji (sp), the first one looked like he was angry instead of smiling!

Doug - I did upgrade. Have not used it yet; still picking through the instructions. As far as I can tell, you don’t need prove 2 or 3 if cooking to time only. I am not attempting to use the app. Still piddling around directly at the controller. Haven’t had much free time of late.

One additional question on Big Red. If you set the PID at temp rather than a program, would Probe 2 just show temps like probe 3 then correct? So in effect I would have two temp probes that I could read remotely and control of the smoker. I most always cook at a set temp, not using programing.

Discovered it will display the temperature of three probes all the time, no matter which mode you are using. If you are using two probes instead, there is setting which can disable the temperature for probe 3.

If you set the controller to single step mode, you only need to set one temperature for pit and it will run forever. The controller will display the temperatures of all three probes all the time.

Excellent!

I am glad you have this figured out Doug. I am still working on it.

Oh, I will be like you learning my way through when I get mine. Till then I just searched to get answers. That statement was a response I received notfrom my own understanding. But it made me make my decision final. Anxious for next shipment to come in.

Let me know what you think of the instructions. Being non-technical I have found them confusing.

David,
I just my new controller a couple of days ago, but it has been raining here so I have not had a chance to install. The directions are ok, but I did not see anything showing what needs to be hooked up to the new controller. Maybe once the rain stops and I pull the old unit is will be obvious.

Hook-up is simple. Just carefully disconnect old unit by removing plugs and connect new. Holes in unit to smoker should line up. If not just elongate controller holes just enough to secure. Do not enlarge. I had one hole that was off about 1/16th inch.

David,
Thanks the rains have stopped and may do this tomorrow, but most likely not smoke again for a few days (traveling).

Has anyone been able to access their smoker when on the cell network -- NOT your home wifi?

Once I leave my wifi network, the device is not accessible.

One QA says it should work on the cell network once a connection is made on the wifi network.  Another QA says it does not work because the device was set up on the wifi in the first place.

I am thinking we need to configure the router for port forwarding... do you what ports should be utilized?

Any help would be appreciated.  I am stumped.

Thank you!

Chris,

Mine does work on cellular away from the house.  I'll look in my Check Point appliance and see what ports it is using or what addresses the smoker is accessing.  I was interested in checking on this any way as I  suspect it is really using some cloud service.

Hooked up Big Red today, install was easy, but getting the wifi working was a bit of a pain. The docs look like they pretty much are the same or similar to what Aubur has on their site. Also using other apps I thought I could just select a temp and it would go. I realize there are six settings, but a simple setting would be nice also. Maybe saving some of my favorite smoke would do the trick. Anyways, as with all new toys, a bit of exploring is needed to get it all figured out.

I do think a video of how to use the app and actually start a smoke of chicken, or brisket would be helpful for new users.

For those interested my WiFi controller connects to ip 54.183.197.146 which is host ec2-54-183-197-146.us-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com(Amazon Web Serivces) on port 16384.  So as long as the wifi controller can access the internet on port 16384 you should be able to use your app over a cellular connection once paired over WiFi.

I would love to know if there is any usage or personnel information being collected by the cloud service.  I know this might sound paranoid but it is a reasonable question given the world we live in.

I just tested the Big Red on the cell network, disconnected wireless and it connects just fine with ATT!

I checked on my temps as I was shopping for groceries today with no issues on my 3D wifi.  That was just with standard phone app setup.

Today was my 3rd smoke.  The only issue I had was that I could not get the app to communicate with the smoker, even though the wifi light was solid blue.  I had to uninstall the app and re-add the smoker.  Then all was fine.

Forum Masters - A Wifi Controller topic might be a valuable addition.

First smoke with the Big Red, simple chicken wings, just on setting 250 degrees for 2 hours.
Unless I am missing something it would be nice if the app rang to let you know that the smoke was completed. Other than that, I am really liking the new setup.

Hey there Jason,

Thank you for the response, but I think we're good!

Half-way through my fourth-of-july smoke (first smoke with the 3d), the wifi module on my iPhone 6 stopped working.  Turned out to be a hardware issue.  There was a Verizon store near me that was open on the 4th so I had an excuse to upgrade to a new iPhone X.  The app now works perfectly.

I'm still curious about how the app knows to tunnel through so seamlessly - but it's no longer an issue.

Thanks so much for offering to help!

Chris
