Kyle, what DM Tony was talking about was the placement of the wood in the box, not the placement of the meat in the smoker. You will want to place your chunks near (but not directly over) the center of the wood box.

I was talking about the wood chunks, not the meat.  I try to control the smolder by getting just outside the really hot spot of the element.
