Kentucky 7 Year AGED in Bourbon, Oak Barrel Chunks

For that price, I'd check with a local brewery.  I picked up two full barrels for $50, used some for a table and now have an entire stack of staves I use for smoking.  The fresh cut wood and the smoke smells amazing.

You got a heck of a deal.  Wine barrels go for $90 - $100 each here in Cali.

The breweries tend to let them go for a lot cheaper since there isn't much "flavor" left for aging anything.  The ones I picked up had been filled with bourbon first, then beer, then another beer.  They don't tend to have a lot of value after that.

yeah, here people will pay that much to use them as a decoration.

U.S. whiskey producers tend to use the standard 53 gallon white oak charred barrel, which weigh 90-120 lbs.  Even after removing the hoops, that's a lot of oak!  At $38 for 10 lbs, a barrel will yield $450-500 worth of oak!  These are a little pricey, but gives you an idea of what we're talking about:

I would never had guessed that new barrel would cost almost $400.00.

I'm somewhat new to the group here, but I'd be happy to send a few pieces to you if you're interested.  I'd just ask that you pay for the shipping.

A local brewery gave me a full box of random stave pieces before I bought the full barrel, so I have plenty given how little these smokers use.

I don't know about new barrels, but this place wants $169, which seems pretty high.

Last year, I picked up 2 barrels at a yard sale for $20.  Mine have been sitting waiting for me to incorporate them into a wet bar in the backyard.  For conversation purposes, maybe I'll remove a couple pieces and when people ask about them, I'll say they just cooked your dinner.

Nice! 8)

I just smoked some Moink balls with two chunks from a wine barrel last night and the smoke and the flavor was divine.

Hey Chris,

Thanks for the wood it looks perfect size for long smokes, I can even trim some down for shorter smoke.

Let me know what you think of the rub I sent you.

Thanks Greg
