For that price, I'd check with a local brewery. I picked up two full barrels for $50, used some for a table and now have an entire stack of staves I use for smoking. The fresh cut wood and the smoke smells amazing.
You got a heck of a deal. Wine barrels go for $90 - $100 each here in Cali.csteele2144 said:For that price, I'd check with a local brewery. The breweries tend to let them go for a lot cheaper since there isn't much "flavor" left for aging anything. The ones I picked up had been filled with bourbon first, then beer, then another beer. They don't tend to have a lot of value after that.

At $38 for 10 lbs, a barrel will yield $450-500 worth of oak! These are a little pricey, but gives you an idea of what we're talking about:

I would never had guessed that new barrel would cost almost $400.00.

I'm somewhat new to the group here, but I'd be happy to send a few pieces to you if you're interested. I'd just ask that you pay for the shipping.
A local brewery gave me a full box of random stave pieces before I bought the full barrel, so I have plenty given how little these smokers use.
