I just noticed that Fruita Wood has Kentucky 7 Year AGED in Bourbon, Oak Barrel Chunks. Price is $38 for 10lbs with free shipping.

Have anyone tried these?

Thanks Greg

I've used the Jack Daniels chips before.  Spending more per pound on wood than the meat that might be in the box doesn't make sense to me.

3 lb bag at True Value hardware store was $5 on sale a few months back.  I've used it, doesnt smell any whisky when used.  Just the oak.

I agree the wood is pricey but have seen where some folks are using wine barrels to add a subtle flavor for chicken and ribs.

Thanks Greg

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 7 year aged Bourbon Oak Barrel Chunks and does it give a hint of Bourbon or flavor to the taste of the meat or whatever is being smoked ?

Greg, personally I think its a gimic.  Get a small bag 1st on amazon or ebay before you lay out for 10 lbs.

John,

I have done whiskey chips a long time ago and didn't see any difference. On the wine barrels, I saw this used in a competition smoke and they claimed it really made a difference in the taste and the bark.

I may order some of the wine chunks just to say I tried it :)

Thats not a fair comment, unless he was going to cook with 10lbs of wood!
I didn't say total price but price per pound or by weight.  He's still spending more per pound on the fuel than the meat.  that's my point.

I agree buy a better cut meat and you will be happier with the results. But it is fun to experiment with new toys and ideas.

In the end, I want a really great meal out of the experience.

As I'm sure most probably take opinions expressed here with a grain of salt, I'm the guy that refuses to buy wood unless absolutely forced to, period.  That's why I've acquired a couple hundred pounds of wood from friends & neighbors cutting down fruit or nut trees.  ;)

Dave,

You are missing an opportunity here, we are all buying wood....

We have to buy it from someone......

Just saying... :)

Greg,

I have this wood, and have used it quite a bit.  You can sure smell the whiskey in the raw wood, but it just gives oak flavor to the meat. :(  My only problem with it is combustion.  It's really dry, and you definitely have to wrap it in foil to keep it from combusting.  Other than that, it's good white oak.
