How many #3 owners have an Auber?

I'm curious how many Model 3 owners use an Auber?

I called Auber yesterday to see about exchanging my unit, which seems to be bad.  They somewhat argued with me that the temperature will always "Oscillate" and that exchanging my unit would do no good.  They did agree to exchange my unit though.

I'm getting 20 to 30 degree temperature swings on a consistent basis.  I don't think anyone else is getting that that I know of.

Please post if you have a Model 3 and use an Auber.  Also, please let me know if while using it, your unit maintains your temperature within a couple of degrees of where it is supposed to be at all times during a smoke.

I have a #3 that is bypassed with an auber.

the temperature is maintained  with +/-  a couple of degrees.

I think the auber it a worthwhile investment. I like to smoke at higher temperatures than most here on the forum.

I set my auber with 30 minutes at 160 and then go to my desired temps. I found i get a nice slow smoke.

Brisket 250
Pork butt 240
Ribs 240.
Poultry 250+

The key is to autotune the auber for your smoker.

Hope this helps.

One thing is i keep my auber in the house as opposed to the garage due to the cooler temperatures.

Libo,

You know my position on the Auber.  Although I don't have a model 3, I have used 2 models of the Auber on the model 1 and 2 smoker, with similar results.  If the unit is tuned properly, you should not be experiencing large temp swings, despite what you were told by whoever you talked at down at Auber.  Maybe those swings are common in the looser, less-insulated smokers, but the common experience with the SIs is tight temps.  If we didn't get that, no one would be using one today!  I got +/- 10º with my stock controller!

Let's see what happens when you get your replacement unit.

Divot,

I understand.  But I am interested in how many SI3 owners are actually using an Auber.

Auber said they have tested and have had no problems with model 1 & 2's.  But that they have no experience with No 3's.

I would like to quantify the number of SI3 owners who are using Aubers.

There may be far more without than with an Auber, judging by the lack of response.  If you are getting good smoked grub without the Auber, maybe it (the Auber) is not worth the trouble you are having.

I have a #4 & started using the Auber about a month ago.... I was skeptical of the need to use one when I first received the #4... & I was getting big temp changes without it (20-40 degs), I tried the Auber... Right outta the box... It held within 1 or 2 degrees... Never did the autotune... I'm hooked, I think its great, I really like to be able to set it up to change temps throughout the entire cook.... For me... IT WORKS!

Good Luck,

Mike

As you can see from the replies so far, the model doesn't matter.  You will see the same results with all.  You either have a bad unit, or your settings are way off somehow.  Not sure which, but we're all here to help!  Your experience is absolutely the first time I've heard of those kind of temp swings with an Auber!

I've had one connected to my #3 for a year. I can smoke in bed ?*!? with outside temps below freezing and awake to meat idling at 140dF.

Do you get temperature swings?  What are your PID settings?

I just recently purchased a used #3 with the Auber WS-1503-CPH. I have not used it yet, but tomorrow will be smoking 3 slabs of ribs. I plan on using it then. I will be doing just a time/temp. program. Not using the food temp.

I will, I also have a new auber for the #1, but have not gotten the parts for the bypass and switch. Also going to add low temp. cords. I was lucky as I purchased Rickne's #3, cart and auber. So I really do not have to do anything with it. But, later will get the permanent mounted probe for it. I purchased the ribs today and will later smear them with mustard and add a cherry/chipotle rub. I will do a post on the pork section.

I have one for my #3 and it usually stays within a couple of degrees. I have not got around to installing the bypass yet. I doubt that it matters, but I bought the one with one probe as I already had several. However, I noticed this post started in December. Just curious if the swap worked.

Brian, I ended up not swapping it out because Auber told me that I would continue to get temperature swings like I was getting. I told them several times that I wanted to swap it out and try another unit. After several calls and emails, they convinced me that they guys who had success with them on here with a model 3 were just lucky.. So I sent it back for a refund.
