Famous Dave's Rib Rub

I've talked about this in posts & recipes, so I thought I'd throw it in the Rub section!  Famous Dave's Rib Rub is a great commercial rub on pork.  I've used it on butts and ribs, as well as pork chops.  I don't find the flavor mix good on beef or poultry, but you might.

I find this rub to make a really nice bark, and have a good mix of sweet and heat.  Dave is a real BBQ guy, and I believe he wouldn't put out a product with his name on it that wasn't good.  I know the chain is commercialized, but that doesn't mean you should be scared to try their products.

Does a "real" BBQer have to make his or her own rub from scratch?  Absolutely NOT!  Scratch rubs are where the creative juices flow, but there are some "store bought" rubs and sauces that end up tasting great!

Famous Dave's Rib Rub is available on Amazon Prime - $21.54 for a 6-pack.  That's about $3.60 a bottle (with no tax and 2-day shipping), which is cheap!  I use almost one bottle for 3 racks of baby backs.

Here's the Amazon link (and no, I'm not an Amazon affiliate, so I don't make a penny off this):

Check it out!

i love Famous Dave's Rub... use it often and I agree with your review... we have a Famous Dave's restaurant near us (40 miles) I have yet to try it but heard it is awesome, just small portions.

Did you notice orange peel in the ingredients?
Thats my secret for my rub. Great minds think alike. Lol!

Yep, sure did, Ed!  I love that there are several ingredients that are not the "norm" for a rub, like dried vegetables.  Good stuff - wish I could figure out the ratios to re-invent it for myself! ;)

Just ordered mine,, along with some of his wing rub,,,
Thanks for the recommendation...
I will let you know how I like it...

I always go to Famous Dave's every time I visit Ohio.  For a commercial franchise, their Q is really good and I love the variety of sauces.  I'm heading down to the US for Thanksgiving and I plan on ordering a box of this rub because this price is cheaper than buying directly from the restaurant.

Thanks for the comments, guys!  I just got my 6 bottles from Amazon today.  Ordering from them saved me almost $2 a bottle over buying it locally!

Firing up the #3 tomorrow with 2 racks of baby backs w/ famous dave's rubs.

5.25 hours no peeky
2 oz of cherry wood
Water pan with apple juice.

I removed the membrane from the middle of the ribs and then worked to the sides.  This technique is awesome.  I have never removed two membranes in less than 2 minutes.  Great tip.

I saw the membrane removal technique in one of Jeff Phillips' newsletters, and was amazed how simple and easy it is!

The ribs were really good as was Dave's rub.  I smoked for 5.25 hours and let rest for an hour (not by design but had some work to do).  The rub has a nice flavor a little bite but overall very good.  I am planning on using this on a butt in the near future. The water pan really helped elevate the temperatures to beyond 250 degrees, max was 261.  I had the temp set at 240 ish.

Sounds good, Ed!  I smoked a 9.25 lb Boston butt this weekend with Dave's (and a brine first).  Turned out great!  I really like it on pulled pork.

I dabbled in rubs, ribs, brisket, and poultry. I thinks its time for a good butt.

what brine did you use for the butt?

Tony, you think we should add a section for brining? We seem to be having a lot of recent discussion on brining.

Ask and ye shall receive!  Great idea, Ed!  I put it in the recipe section.
