Bill,  I'm going with your method here.  4.5 hours at 235*.  Ill then sauce them and go another 30 mins.  Do you add anymore wood when you sauce them?  At 4.5 hours most of the smoke is done.

No more wood required. 
 
I did add 1 piece of wood.  You were right.  Not needed.  I now have an unplugged, unloaded smoker that's smoking away!
