Wireless temp probe

Hello I was wondering which wireless temp probes everyone uses? I have seen the Mavericks mentioned quite a bit but sre there any cheaper ones you gutus are using? Just placed an order for model 1

Thanks.

Welcome from Saint Augustine Florida!

I have tried many remotes and now own the Maverick 733. It's a great unit that comes with two probes, which allows you to cook two meats at the same and monitor the temps.

Welcome, Skyguy!  I have the Maverick 732 and have been using it pretty much every weekend for the past two years.  I did order new probes after the first year as both started giving me bizarre temp readings (I think the connections went bad).  The replacement probes have been working fine.

Like Greg I have tried several wireless remotes including ones from Taylor and Williams Sonoma but now mostly use a Maverick 733. The 733 has a much better range than the others although it is perhaps overly complicated for our needs-each probe can be either a food probe or a box probe and the box probes can be set with both high and low temp alarms. Overall the 733 is a very good unit. Interestingly unlike others on this forum I have had relatively few probe problems- I can remember one in perhaps the last 15 years including both wired and wireless units. I just wipe the probes and wires with a damp paper towel as soon as they come out of the SI or the grill and store them in a Tupperware box inside the house. Seems to work for me, or maybe I have just been lucky.

I had two from Gander Mountian and had a range of 10', suppose to be 100. Took them back and they gave me my money back

Bought the Maverick 732 and it has been great so far.

Thanks for feedback. I saw a igrill for 39.99 seemed cool but rather have reliabilty. On amazon they have the 732 and gripper forks (?) For 59.99

I assume the "gripper forks" are the clips that come with the probes to attach them to the cooking rack. I recently saw a deal on Amazon for a Maverick 733 with free Bear Paw shredding forks for $69.99(free shipping)

Welcome from Texas! I a maverick 733 with dual probes. No problems so far. I have been as far as 50 feet away inside my house and it hasn't missed a beat.

I think most of us probably just use forks. I start off with a pair of turkey lifter forks and then use either forks or bear paws to finish.

By the way, thanks for all the greetings. My smoker is waiting for UPS to pick it up. Was registered as shipped Sunday eve. I live just south of Richmond, Indiana.  Can't wait for it to get here. Hoping it'll be here within a few days. Would be nice to have it by the 4th.

Hi Skyguy.....Welcome from Eastern MA!
My guess is that by the 4th you'll have it. I received mine in 3 days.

Are the bear paws a good tool to have or do most people just use forks?

I got a set of bear paws with my 733 and have been using them ever since. I think they work way better than forks.

Welcome Skyguy!  If you wouldn't mind, add a first name and town to your signature line (Forum Profile).  It helps us get to know you better!  Also, it's nice to post something in the Introductions section about yourself - like BBQ experience and such.

Great to have you with us!  BTW, I'm a bear claw fan for pulling pork!

For pulled pork, I don't think you can beat the bear claws.  I wouldn't use them on chicken or anything else with small bones until after I'd completely deboned the meat though because you lose all sense of touch.

I have used the iGrill mini for 1.5 years with no problems at all. I just got an iGrill2 but have not had time to use it. One of my favorite things about it is the graph. It makes it easier to estimate when the food will be done.

Has anyone seen a dual probe thermometer that isn't remote?

Dave,

I have been looking at the ThermaQ, but hey are really pricy. The unit without probes it $120.00.

ThermaQ ®
Professional 2-Channel Thermocouple Alarm
Model #231-050

High and Low Alarms for Both Channels
Min & Max Temps Constantly Displayed
Thermapen quality and accuracy - Made in England
Bright Backlit Display for night or shadows
Hundreds of Probe Options
3,000 Hour Battery Life
2-Year Warranty

Greg,
The reason that I was looking for a dual probe without remote is because I don't want to pay the $70 for the Mavericks.  I enjoy getting up off the couch every couple of hours to go smell what's happening on the patio.

So I guess the ThermaQ is not a good fit :)
