Using Emerald's "essense" and brown sugar as a rub

Good day everyone -
I am wondering if anyone has used Emeral Lagasse's "original essense" as a rub base.  I have used it before, but it was a bit strong.  I was thinking of mixing some brown sugar.
Question:  Does anyone know a good "ratio" for a decently mild (and slightly sweet) taste?  I was thinking to mix the two together and taste it, but the pro's here know far more than I.  I am still on the old "wood smoker", but am saving  up for a model 2.  The wife did not take the "birthday" hint earlier this month.
Thanks all in advance,
Scottieboy

Thanks, Tony.  I am planning on smoking a couple of racks of Baby Backs.  I've used essense before, but after studying up on here (and learning from the pros) I now know that in the past I have put way too much wood and smoke (even with my cheap smoker) when I cooked.  I will monkey around with less smoke and "leaner" rub mix with some brown sugar.  If they turn out fit to eat, I'll bring a rack to share with my coworkers and follow up here.  Now just to get enough beer to babysit my cheap smoker (as I continue to save up for that model 2) :-)

I have smoked many pounds of pork and chicken with the Essense. You don't need to add sugar, you need to cut the cayenne pepper in half. Reducing the pepper reduces the heat and lets the flavors show themselves.
