First time running the Auber Controller I picked up used on ebay.  WOW talk about supreme control + or - 2 degress.  Still using the Maverick monitior also just for convenience and they run about 2 degrees different.  Good enough for the me.  I will never again not have one.  Plus I got a great deal on it at $129 bucks!!  Doing a chicken and some pork loins.

Steve's going to start carrying them, but you can get them direct from Auber:

$22.50 well-spent!

Is it safe to drill through the back of the unit just below the top rack?  No wires there going to the heat element?

Here's the install post:

You will mount it about 3" from the top.  I marked just below the top shelf, with the side racks in the highest setting, and then lowered them and made sure it didn't conflict with the highest shelf on the low setting.  It's right at 3".

When you drill the hole in the back wall, you should have the back off and all the insulation out.  Make sure the wires are clear of where the drill will come through.

When I did my fixed probe install I took the back off removed ALL of the insulation, then removed the door pins and took the door off, marked the spot inside as per Tony's post, I then laid the smoker on it's back so I was looking directly into it this works great as you will need a good bit of pressure to get through that stainless steal, it also helps to drill a smaller hole first, the whole process took maybe one hour from start to finish, and if you don't have good sharp bits go buy a couple you'll be very glad you did. Also if you don't want to do an auto tune you can just copy some of the other parameters used by others with  the same smoker, that's what I did and it performs awesome, did 4 racks ribs yesterday, 235 for 5 hours, no peak, went and did a few errands came back to perfect ribs the Auber holding exactly 235......unreal still amazed by that thing.

How do you put the Auber into auto tune mode?

Go to Smokin-It.com.  Under "Instructions," there's a downloadable pdf I put together on the process.
