My chip screen is always in so I don't know if it plays much of a part in my success. If you have one, I'd say use it. If you don't, it probably isn't a big deal. Do you foil boat now? If that is working, nothing wrong with that either. I just do it this way and thought I'd share.

I have been placing my wood all the way in the back of the smoke box closest to the rear wall of the smoker, and now I don't foil and it is working. Yesterday with the BB, I have nothing but ash when the butt was removed at 11 hours. I am trying this again today with ribs...two pieces of hickory (5oz total) without foil boating. When the smoker was first heating up, I did get a couple "puffs" of smoke, but no belch. It is also somewhat windy here today, and I think the wind effects the wood combustion...yesterday, no wind and did not see even the slightest "puff", just a nice stream of light smoke.
So far, using the Smokilicious wood I recently got, I no longer have the need to foil my wood at all! Apparently, I've never had wood with a high enough moisture content, but now I do. I've used their maple and cherry so far, straight in the box, and direct to smoking temp, without a hint of a flareup!
