Ready to pull the trigger, but...

Howdy! Completely new here so bear with me. I've been researching for the past few weeks on what smoker I want to buy, and have finally made my mind up on the Model 3 from Smokin-It (as opposed to the cookshack smokette elite and the smokin tex 1400). I have experience burning sticks as you would say, but am wanting to move towards the set and forget form of BBQ. Needless to say, I am excited about my future Smokin-It as well as being a part of the brand's vibrant and informative forum.

The hold-back I am experiencing is finding a way to justify the $144 shipping cost. I have seen where Smokin-It will run a promo and ship a free cover or some rib hooks and other accessories. This would help me justify the purchase in my mind, but they aren't running any promos currently.  So my question is: How often does Smokin-It run promos like the aforementioned?

I can't wait forever though. I'm too excited.

They can't seem to keep the #3 on the shelves so, incentives during popular smoking season might be a roll of the dice.  And if you decide to pull the trigger, there may or may not be a wait.  You should make your order on the facebook site to save 5%.  (That was a deal being offered when I purchased and not sure if that is a standing deal or not) I would call and talk to the owner on the phone before doing anything so you know what to expect as far as availability.

Hi Joe!  We're almost neighbors!

Great decision in the #3.  You can't stress about the shipping...it is what it is.  The #3 is a very large, heavy unit, and takes up a lot of UPS cargo space and weight.  It's a "one time" thing we all have to bite the bullet on.  And, when you compare the overall cost of the competitors you've been considering, you'll still be money ahead - even with the shipping.  Call Steve before you order.  He's a great guy, and will likely throw some specials your way just for taking the time to call him!

Let us know how else we can help!

The quality of the packaging  your #3 arrives in will surprise you, it is very well packed. Also the shipping is very fast. Buy the #3 and get an extra bag of wood at the same time. You will be having so much fun with it in a few weeks you will forget about the shipping cost.

This link has some pictures of how well the smokers are packaged.

Hi Joe,

I am like you and recently ordered the #3 which should be delivered today  8). I did stress over the shipping costs but like the other folks said don't sweat it. One question have you actually gone through the order process up until actually pressing the purchase button? I was very pleasantly surprised when I got to the calculate shipping section and it only came to $75. A LOT less than I had read about from others. Granted I didn't check where those folks were from when I read their forum posts but you may be surprised also.

Do take advantage of the tip SuperDave gave you and if you're a veteran you can get a few extra goodies for your service also.

Joe,

Not sure if it applies to you but they do offer a Military discount

Not sure if you want to wait that long, but typically around holidays Steve runs specials such as Mother's/Father's Day, Christmas, Valentine's Day, etc. I wouldn't be surprised to see one coming as we get closer to Easter. But like Tony said, a call to Steve may be worth a shot right now.

Either way, you have made a great choice by picking the #3. I love my #3 and while is pretty big, if you do need to travel with it, it really isn't that hard either.

Awesome!

Now the long agonizing wait. JK, shipping is usually super fast.

What's going to be your first smoke? I would recommend a Boston Butt. They are easy to make, hard to mess up, and a great way to break in the smoker.

I use Divotmaker's Boston Butt brining recipe and have NEVER had a bad one. Check out this thread:

The #3 is on its way!  ;D
I talked to Steve this morning and he is helping ease my pain. I also saved 5% through the FB page. Thanks for all the help!

CONGRATS!  :)

You will not regret the 3. It is a lifetime smoker! I do not regret avoiding a 1-3 year smoker money well spent.

2 UPS day delivery was only $75 but it took 4 :-)  I think I will start with The Divot Boston Butt recommendation too!

My box gave up it's life in several areas but did it's job. Not a scratch or a dent. 110lbs so too big for the casual thief to walk off with it while you return from work.

NDK: Ribs are a personal favorite, so I'll probably start with those. Thinking I'll do the Boston butt for my 2nd smoke. I had seen DM's brining method and was already thinking I would try it.

Damnfingers: Yep. Fairly recent transplant. OK has been pretty good so far.

My first smoke was ribs, taking about 5.5 hours.  If you can't wait that long to try out the smoked delight, then chicken might be up your alley...usually takes about 3 hours for chicken quarters, or 2.5 hours for skinless chicken breasts wrapped in bacon.  My recommendation is go the 5.5 hours and get you some good ribs!

Absolutely nothing beats a turkey in the #3 that has been injected & rubbed. My relatives will refuse to allow me entrance to any holiday gathering if I don't bring 1. Everytime the only thing left is bones. They prefer it over a Turduckin or even a fried turkey.
Today I have a large pork roast setting on 220* using apple wood.
Like most - ribs are the best, a good brisket is excellent. I have done fish, deer sausage, bacon & peppers. I grow & make my own Cajun spice & will smoke the peppers prior to dehydrating for a unique flavor enhancement.
