I think if i forego getting the cart i can swing getting a #3

i'm wondering how hot it gets on the underside.. could i put it up on something like a picnic table.. a wooden or very thick sturdy plastic one (with out it's wheels on) or does the underside get to hot for that?

You can put it on a table w/o issue. There is a gap underneath it that also houses the drip pan so there is plenty of room for air to circulate to keep it cool. Also, the SIs are insulated very well so the outside doesn't get hot at all.

My 3D is seasoning now at 250 deg so I went out and checked.  The bottom is warmer (hotter?) than the sides/top which is to be expected.  The bottom is not insulated.  However, because of the smokers weight, I would shy away from plastic or anything not super sturdy. My time spent inside my Cookshack has been minimal (foiling, cleaning, placing or removing meat) that I never found the need for a cart or stand. I expect my time bending over or stooping will likewise be minimal with my SI 3D. At 65, I consider it exercise.

thanks for the real life check

i have a very heavy duty plastic picnic table. like a park table. i don't think it would melt or soften from heat but not like i ever tried setting on fire or anything either..weight wise will be no problem. but i was thinking i could put a square of 3/4 inch or better plywood on it then the smoker on that ..

either way i'm likely going to get the 3 but no cart.. worse comes to worse i can figure out the cart situation later on. my wife is well shorter we can for a bucket brigade to get the meat in and out

That ought to work. Maybe bolt the ply to the legs and leave the wheels off for better stability? I think you will appreciate the extra capacity of the 3 and no cart over a 2 with the cart. But that is just my opinion.  You have to go with what you are going to be most comfortable with and what you smoke and the size of the meals you will be putting out.

Here's another option I use with my 3D, options are a good thing ;-)
Have fun with your #3
