PID permanent probe placement on #3

Where is the best location for the probe?

I notice on the heatermeter thread it is only about an inch or so from the top and the auber instructions say just below the top rack.  What is the consensus on these for the #3?

Trip,
The consensus is that the air is more stable near the top.  How many inches from the top seems to vary among us in part because of the different size units we have.  The guys with the smaller units (nothing personal) tend to go with the inch from the top placement as to not interfere with top rack food placement.  In my #4, I've got 11 rack positions so went with 5" from the top as I don't envision ever having a food conflict with my probe.

When I wrote the permanent probe instructions, I did the first install based on Auber's recommendation, which was for a Bradley smoker.  3" from the top is too low, and will conflict with food.  I have since modified the placement to 1" below the top.  Stable air, and won't conflict.

You think going with 1" from the top would be the right call on the 3 as well?  Seems like if I put it below the top rack, I would have issue with a big brisket that most likely would be sitting on the second from the top rack placement.  I guess I could put it below the second from the top rack, but then drippings might cause some issue.  1" really is starting to sound like best placement for 1-3 to me.

I think the higher placement will work well for any of the models, Trip.  The heat, at the very top, before it exits the blow hole (as I call the top vent) is stable and consistent.  And hey, if you have to move it later, because you want to, put a little hi-temp silicone in the hole and all is good!  But, I don't think you'll ever have to move it.

I placed mine under the first rack on my #3. It worked great when I cooked a brisket on the 3rd rack down but it interfered when I was smoking ribs on the second rack. The ribs were giving a cooling affect around the probe.
If I'm reading the above thread correctly, you guys are recommending 1" from the top of the cabinet and plugging the old hole with hi temp silicone?

thanks for the help

I ran into that same problem with the #2.  I used the mounting location you mentioned, based on Auber's instructions, which were based on a Bradley.  I had many instances of having to move meat lower than I wanted due to probe intrusion (the older permanent probe is even longer than the new style GPH probe).

To answer your question simply - - Yes.

Placed mine 1" from the top and did my first real heatermeter smoke yesterday at 300, came out pretty decent and the spot seems to be working fine based on some Maverick probes I placed in other locations.  I had some growing pains adjusting to the heatermeter and attempting chicken for the first time, plus the rain didn't help things.  Heatermeter took on some water because I moved the smoker some to get it in from the rain and lost wifi when the water got in the case that I didn't notice.  The power connections for the usb on the  raspberry pi are the furthest down on the backside of the case, when I lost my connection I immediately went outside and caught it before it did any damage.  Dried out the case and the USB on the Pi and the Wifi adapter still worked fine.  Still learning on the sweet spot for wood placement as well.
