Need help identifying wood.

Need help identifying wood. We cut down a tree cuz it was diseased at it's base. So first, is it still safe to use? Second, my father thinks it's an oak, but not sure. Any way to tell from the pics? Lastly, if it is oak, and I can use it to smoke, should I get a wood moisture meter, so I know when it has aged long enough?

Also, he had a mini pear tree. He said it litterally grew pears, the size of strawberries, is that wood safe to use?

Sure looks like oak.
I've never bothered with a moisture meter for smoking (and I have one because I turn wood on a lathe), and if it is dry, works fine.  In an electric smoker, don't use more than 2-4 ounces.
