more meat

No such thing as a stupid question right?  Hope not. Family get together this weekend and going to double up on meat in the si2. My question......Do I need to add a little extra wood? Or....With more meat in smoker will it take meat longer to reach 140 deg. therefore absorbing more smoke with same amount of wood? Any input would be greatly appreciated.....love the info available here!!

Wood quantities are somewhat based on length of smoke time, so, 5 hours of one piece of meat will use the same amount of wood as 5 hours with 2 pieces of meat.  With more meat, it will take slightly longer for the box to reach set temperature so the overall length of time will be a little longer but not twice as long.  It cooks like there is only one piece other than the extended warm up period.

The last time I did two butts in my #2 I didn't see that it took appreciably longer to heat up. Since they were large pieces of meat I did get some "shading" of the upper rack so it took longer to finish. I agree with Dave that additional wood probably isn't needed.

Another trick, if you have the space, for reducing that 'shading' effect is to offset your butts as much as possible while leaving an inch or so on whatever side you're getting close to (I do left/right, but you could just as easily do front/back)

Easy in a #3...not so much in a #2 (if doing butts).  Two shelves is pretty much mandatory, unless they're really small.

oh no Tony, I'm not putting them on the same shelf, just offsetting them so that the top one has as little coverage of the bottom one as possible
