Model 2 temps analog

I am noticing on my model 2 analog some pretty big temp changes. I have a box temp probe close to the thermostat. Early on in smokes I will get temps as much as 40 degrees higher than my temp settings. Is this normal ?

Ah good...Mine went up about same on first ramp up from 32 degrees...at 289 upper internal temp the element turned off...it was set to 225.

Was getting nervous...

Everyone with an analog model needs to NOT look at the box temp. The only temp you should monitor is the internal meat temp.

An analog model like the stove in you kitchen has temp swings, get over it. Nobody thinks to track your wife's oven temp, stop doing it with the smoker.

Th temps average out, the food is delicious. Stop making stress in a relaxing hobby.

I had an analog thermostat go bad.  The only way I knew that was because my thermometer probe in the box showed me there was no change in temp from the 375 it went up to. Then I knew why my pork butts were coming out burnt and seemed to cook in 1.5 hours.

So I do monitor the box temps, but I don't fret the temperature swings.

Same here.  I find that ambient conditions (temp, wind, etc.) affect the temperature in the box such that if I set the rheostat at exactly the same temperature I can get different box temperatures on different days.  I then adjust the rheostat until the box temperature "average" is what I'm looking for and proceed to forget about swings.
