Just Received the #2 for Christmas and Have a Question re: Power Light

As the title says, I just received the #2 from my kids for Christmas.  I went out yesterday to season it and after cleaning the inside and adding the wood chips, plugged it in and set the temperature to 250.  There was no "power" indication, i.e., the power light didn't illuminate, so I checked the outlet to make sure it was hot (it was), double checked I had it plugged in all the way (it was), moved the thermostat back and forth to see if I could make the light come on (I couldn't), and then noticed a small amount of smoke coming from the smoke hole.  I opened the door and the burner was on so the unit is definitely getting power.  Since I was just going to season the unit anyway, I closed the door and let it cook for necessary 4 hours, turned the thermostat down and unplugged it.  The power light never lit.

Is there an easy fix for this?  I don't want to continue using the unit without a power indication since I'll never know for sure that it's working.  Red light equals "peace of mind".

BTW...darn but it smells good though now that it's seasoned!

Definitely contact Steve at SI...sounds to me like the bulb may have burned out.  In addition to the red light going on and off, you can also hear a slight click noise when the heating element comes on/turns off.  But I agree with you, seeing that red light is important!

Yes, contact Steve.  I think this is an LED light, so my guess would be the power wire to the bulb may have gotten disconnected, either during assembly or transit.  If you're mechanical at all, you can remove the back panel and check the wire.  It is actually hooked into one of the power leads that goes to the controller.  But, do contact Steve and see what he thinks.

You can see the black power lead going to the light in this pic.  Don't follow the instructions in the pic - it's from the post on how to bypass the stock controller.

Thanks all...I'll definitely contact Steve on Monday.  That picture was worth a lot of explanation.

And yes, semi-handy with my hands.  Retired Navy electronics technician and enjoy working on British cars (which have a lot of electrical problems).

The indicator light went bad on my #1 shortly after I received it....surprisingly, one of the metal posts had broke off.
I got a replacement within a few days.

Contacted Steve after pulling the back off the smoker and finding no loose wires.  He's sending a new LED to me...hopefully that will take care of the no "power light" problem.

Finally got the chance to replace the light - just clipped the wires on the bad one and used wire nuts to connect the new one.  Works fine now!
