Model 2 arrived yesterday, sucks its only Tuesday now just need Maverick to get here which leads me to my question,is there a recomended place to put the probe to monitor the temp in the smoker? Thanks in advance.

I put it grate level with the meat.  I either use a foil ball or a block of wood with a hole in it to hold it off the grate.

Your Maverick should come with a clip to clip it to the grate. If not the tin foil works. I have also used a potato with a side cut off to make it flat. You can eat the potato afterward (bonus!).

I too usually clip it to the grate that the meat is on off to one of the sides about two inches from the side wall.

You want to make sure that it is not too close to the meat or the temperature from the meat could give you false readings.

BTW, I wouldn't bother using the Maverick on your seasoning smoke as the temperatures in an empty box will be all over the place. When you smoke with meat in the box it provides a heat sync (or is it sink ;)) and helps level out the smoker temperatures.

So, get her seasoned up so you're ready to go with some meat when your Maverick is delivered.

Pretty exciting!  The wait will be worth it!  The Maverick has a clip that allows you to clip it to the shelves, so no need for foil or potatoes.  Gregg's absolutely right about not monitoring box temp while seasoning.  Temps are crazy, and not an indicator of how it will perform full.  Also, don't bother foiling anything for seasoning - save it for the meat.

Good luck, and let us know how we can help!
