Welcome to the forum. Have you checked the freeze/boil temp readings of the thermometer you are using to ensure it is accurate? I have attached a link to a chart to help since altitude affect the boiling temp. And no offense meant but is the probe free of packing material?(once in a while it does happen). Also, if your unit has the box probe up toward the top of the smoker, be careful to ensure that the meat is not in touch with the probe - that has happened on occasion and affected the temperature. With thee smoker empty and the wood box off, turn it on to 225 = or -. The element should be pretty much uniform in glow with no dark or black areas. If all is well, contact Steve. I have also included a link for checking the heating element with a digital multimeter if you want to do that but since it is new I would not go to that level of tinkering.
Even a new unit can have a factory defect of some kind and although very rare it does happen.
