off the road for a bit been waiting to stop in here
thinking when the time comes and it's still a ways off that maybe i can stretch my dollars a little and get the 3d rather than the 3

i figure there must be a good number of people on here now that own one

how well does the temp controller work? is it worth the extra price? hoping it is

If you think that you'd enjoy the fact that you can set the temp you want to cook at and know it will stay at that temp for the entire smoke, then the 3D is what you want.

If your a control freak def get the 3D. If not the #3 does a great job for around 200 dollars less. Either way you win.

thank you both very much

i was wondering can the 3d be used if the pid ever gives out? and/or if the pid ever gives out can it be replaced? i didn't see them listed on the replacement parts area of the store

No and Yes. If the PID shoots craps, you're out of business. It can definitely be replaced. As I've had no issues, I'll just let my "control freak" method continue and enjoy the steady temps. Putting two 9 lb pork butts on in about 90 minutes, and will set the internal temp target to 195 and will smoke at 235 using both apple and hickory. Then I'll head to the pub and have a couple of cold one's. They will smoke all night and should be done about 15-16 hours later, but the PID watches over them for me. So really, no "control freak" method at all. Just using technology the way it was meant to be. Happy Smoking!

im a new member i have a 3D i can tell you this i set it to 235 or whatever and it stays right there ive done jerky pork butt and ribs PERFECT

I have the SI3 with an external PID controller from Auber. The benefit of the controller is that you can regulate the temperature for different temp at different stages which gives you more flexibility.

For example, you can set the the smoker for 235 until the internal temp hits 195, then have the temp automatically drop to 140 to keep it warm. Big advantage if your not around to monitor it or if you hit 195 overnight while you are sleeping.

In my opinion it is worth it but it is also not necessary. When I bought my SI3 a few years ago it wasn't an option otherwise I would have jumped on it. Hence the reason why I have the external control which is really the same thing but easier to replace if it goes.

Stout, like everyone has said, you win either way!  I've used the straight stock analog dial, the standard smoker with 3 different standalone Auber PIDs, the 2D and 3D, for over 3 years (for what it's worth).  I have never had a single problem out of any of the Auber controllers!  I had one probe failure, but that's the nature of the beast with temperature probes (Auber or any others....they fail sometimes).

Now for my 2¢ on whether to go standard, D model, or standard with standalone Auber controller:  Go D model, all the way!  The convenience of the integrated controller is well-worth the extra $.  "Cry once," as they say...  Yes, the stock analog controller makes GREAT BBQ!  But, you will experience 10-20° temperature swings.  They will "average-out" to the set temp, but it's a problem if you never want it to go above the set temp (for things like fish and jerky).  The D model will give that 1-2° consistency.  Plus, the ability to set 6 separate programs (or steps) to your cook is great; it truly automates the process!  (I'm all about the Lazy Q lifestyle!).

If you go stock, with a standalone Auber, it also works fantastic.  But, the setup is more involved (2 separate units - smoker and Auber), more wires, and the standalone is not very weatherproof.  The D model controller is housed in a water-resistant housing, and things like light rain or snow will not effect it.  Plus, there are only two (or even one) cords to deal with - the smoker and the meat probe.  (If smoking by time, like ribs, you don't even need the meat probe hooked up).

That's my nickels-worth of 2¢! 8)
