Stout, like everyone has said, you win either way! I've used the straight stock analog dial, the standard smoker with 3 different standalone Auber PIDs, the 2D and 3D, for over 3 years (for what it's worth). I have never had a single problem out of any of the Auber controllers! I had one probe failure, but that's the nature of the beast with temperature probes (Auber or any others....they fail sometimes).
Now for my 2¢ on whether to go standard, D model, or standard with standalone Auber controller: Go D model, all the way! The convenience of the integrated controller is well-worth the extra $. "Cry once," as they say... Yes, the stock analog controller makes GREAT BBQ! But, you will experience 10-20° temperature swings. They will "average-out" to the set temp, but it's a problem if you never want it to go above the set temp (for things like fish and jerky). The D model will give that 1-2° consistency. Plus, the ability to set 6 separate programs (or steps) to your cook is great; it truly automates the process! (I'm all about the Lazy Q lifestyle!).
If you go stock, with a standalone Auber, it also works fantastic. But, the setup is more involved (2 separate units - smoker and Auber), more wires, and the standalone is not very weatherproof. The D model controller is housed in a water-resistant housing, and things like light rain or snow will not effect it. Plus, there are only two (or even one) cords to deal with - the smoker and the meat probe. (If smoking by time, like ribs, you don't even need the meat probe hooked up).
That's my nickels-worth of 2¢! 8)
