First time Prime Rib question

Roostershooter

New member
I plan on smoking a prime rib for the first time for the upcoming holidays.  I have a roast that is boneless and a little over 4 pounds.  I will be smoking at 200 degrees until IT hits 128.  How much time should I allow for this roast to be done?  Thanks in advance.

I usually cook mine just a tad hotter and they take +/- 45 minutes a pound.  At 200, I'd think that you would be very close to an hour a pound.

My theory is this- say you want to cook a turkey. The recipe calls for 3 hours (180 minutes) at 325 and you want to cook it at 200. You simply take the 325 X 180 = 58,500. You take that number and divide it by 200. 58,500/200=292 minutes, new cooking time. I have done this successfully for years.

I did a roast a few weeks ago at 200o and it was almost exactly 1 hr/lb to an IT of 130of.  I also did a reverse sear for 8 min at 550o.

The smoked prime was a huge success!  It took 4 hours and 15 minutes. Did a reverse sear at 500 in the oven.
