Drinkin and Smokin

I like to have a few beers when I am grillin.  Usually grillin doesn't take that much time.  I am new to smoking and just purchased a model #2.  I may have a dilemma.  If smoking takes 4 or more hours, sometimes up to 12 hours, then I may not be conscience when the food is done or I may not remember how the meat tasted.  Hmmmmm, what I am I to do.  I am from Louisiana and drinkin while grillin is the normal way of life.

Hey Jim,

You might need to set an alarm to wake up in time to pull your food from the smoker :)

This has been a dilemma for us too, probably 2/3 of what I've smoked I have no recollection of eating when it was fresh because I was hammered by the time it finally came off the smoker.  Not only is it disappointing to not remember how it was fresh, it is hard to adjust smoking procedure/approach based on the leftovers the next day.

With the Auber controller that has all changed.  I prep and put the meat on the smoker the night before (sometimes don't remember that either) and have the Auber on a delay so that it starts smoking early in the morning while I'm passed out.  I wake up and immediately check the smoke production, smoker temp, meat temp - and once confirming all is good crack a beer and wait for the deliciousness to be done.

I only drink on non-work nights, so when I get into it, there really isn't any stopping until I'm passed out.

Hey Josh.  I am a drinker only on the weekends too.  Good luck with the Drinkin/Smokin dilemma.  Have fun and like swthorpe said "all things in moderation"

Quite a dilemma, Jim!  Can't swear I haven't been there myself, a time or two, but will say "I have no recollection of that, Senator!"  The key is to start the smoke (butts and briskets) in the wee hours of the morning, when you'd usually be sleeping instead of drinking, and then don't start until the afternoon when it's almost done!  The great thing about these smokers is that you don't have to sit by it the whole time and babysit, so it's really not like grilling.  Should help control the urge, if you're in the house doing other things!  Good luck! ;)
