Does this hobby of ours make you spend money?

I belong to another forum involving another smoker and I've posted this type of topic on there.

The cool thing about forums like this is that we all get to share things that we have found that work well for us and sometimes that equates to other tools and gadgets and that in turn equates to monies being spent, lol.

I have lots of accessories due to like minded people saying "Hey, look at this, you outta buy one for yourself". The latest thing is DivotMaker enlightening me on "The Briner". I have brined things for many moons and I could certainly get by without having a "The Briner" but dang it, once you see something that somebody says is a cool gadget, you think about and think about it.......then you break down and buy it :D

I've got 2 "Briner Jr" tubs arriving today and can't wait to try them. Thanks Tony!! ;) ;D ;D

Jason,

Before reading the forums I had mostly use zip lock bags for brining. Then found the Briner Jr. and like you had to order one. They work really well, I showed mine to my friend next door and he just ordered one.

Thanks everyone again for sharing!

Greg

And looking at your porch pictures, I want built in-s now!:)

Glad I could be an inspiration ;D

If you're really serious about it, go to bbqcoach.com for your needed supplies as far as the framing goes. You order the size of the frame you want, order "cutout" kits for your doors and appliances. Easy Peezy. He has quite a bit of youtube videos as well.

The answer to your question, Jason, is a definite YES! (At least in my case).  When I had my construction company (builder, not just a contractor), my guys called me "Mr. Cool Tool" for a reason.  Unfortunately, BBQ seems to fall into that same way of thinking, for me.  I believe in the "right tool for the job," and I want tools that will never let me down.  When I find one that works up to my standards, I'll share it!  I won't share things that are junk, or the recommendation doesn't mean anything.  With that said - I believe you'll love the Briner Jr.! 8)

I think I am going to like the Jr. just fine. I'll be trying them both out soon. I am going to hopefully do the Keg vs. SI vs. Traeger challenge not this weekend but next, so the briners will be in action. My neighborhood is having a neighborhood yard sale and I am going to be selling some sammiches so I figured what better time to cook 3 butts, lol.

Jason, you have definitely got hobby forums pegged.  It is especially bad if you have compulsive tendencies and no significant other to ride herd on excessive expenditures.  I don't know why I am dumb enough to spend so much time on smoking/bbq, cigar, and gun boards which provoke so much spending other than there is no one saying "Uh,uh.  No way.  HELL NO!"  Like you, I saw the Briner listed here and SMF, and I had to have BOTH sizes.  But they are great.  I got the idea to smoke bellies--so I had to have the cold smoke rack, an Auber, and a Jerky Dryer.  And the spare refrigerator to hold the curing and brining meats, and the spare freezer to hold said meats for future consumption.  And the vacuum sealer to prepare said meats for the freezer.  And the proper boning, butcher, paring, etc. knives to render said meats into manageable pieces.  And a 3/4 HP grinder, a 20 lb meat mixer, and 15 lb vertical sausage stuffer.  And a 12" 90lb slicer to accurately handle any slicing challenges.  And the 8 books of instructions and recipes about recipes, rubs, sauces, techniques for smoking, bbq, charcuterie and sausage.  It goes on and on.

You don't want to know what it is like on the cigar boards when someone posts  "Hey, so-and-so just listed the latest, greatest cigar we all love at the unbelievable sale price of ????? for the next 12/24/36 hrs".  Feeding frenzy!

Gun boards--"Hey, so-and-so just got in 22LR CCI Mini-mags on sale with no limits on quantity.  You know,  the ammo we have not seen anywhere in almost 2 years!"

After I smoke the cigars, after I shoot the ammo, what do I have to show for it?  Nothing!  At least with our hobby after the product is used we have something to show for it.  A larger spare tire and a fat butt.  But it was worth the ride getting there.

And it definitely beats the "Uh, uh. No way.  HELL NO!" option.  Been there, done that, won't make that mistake again.

C'mon guys. That's what a hobby is. A chance to learn, participate, feel good, socialize, get away from the wife, husband, family or friends for awhile, get immersed in something we love, get away from reality for a brief period, to focus, and to spend some of our hard earned cash on a project that lifts us up.  This is the time to Rejoice because we are fortunate enough to be able to do this. This is a guilt free zone. WE DESERVE THIS! GOOD FOR US!

Guilt? Not me ;)

I have very few vices,  this is one that benefits me, my family and friends alike.  Life is good for us,  we are the masters of our universe are we not?

+1!  Your comments, too, Jason! ;D

Hear hear (i.e. +2) Over the years I have had lots of hobbies (flying, fishing, shooting, etc) but cooking-mostly grilling and smoking- is the only one that makes other people happy in addition to me.

I hope what I posted above has not been taken as being negative about our hobbies.  That is the last thing I was doing.  That post was a little bit of toungue-in-cheek attempted humor.  I love all my hobbies and internet boards.  Without them what would we do with our time?  What would we spend our money on?  You can't take it with you.

I have met the nicest people on hobby internet boards and have been exposed to a fair amount of acquired knowledge from them along the way.  But knowledge is a dangerous thing.  It causes us to get deeper into our hobbies, hence the "gotta have that" syndrome.  So yes, this hobby does make a person spend money, but so what.  It's a lot of fun.

First off, I'm pretty sure there is a corner of heaven that looks something like RG's picture. Buddy, that is awesome! This new found smoker hobby of mine has definitely made me spend money as I like having gadgets, gizmos and tools. I do get the occasional eye roll out of my "finance manager" whenever I make yet another purchase, but am quickly forgiven when it's dinner time. When I was younger my Dad taught me how to grill on a charcoal Weber kettle and I still use one to this day. He was a master at timing grill and meat temp to coincide with how many beers he felt like drinking that day. Please don't take that out of context...he's not a drunk, he just enjoys knocking back a few frothy beverages on the weekend (who doesn't?). Anyway, I was a quick study and this skill has transitioned quite nicely into smoking on my SI #2. My Boston Butt went in at 0600 this morning and my garage fridge is well stocked for a beautiful Sunday afternoon in NC. Smoke on brothers!

Tim,
Great plan for a relaxing day.  But with the time it takes a butt on the cooking agenda to complete might not those beverages taste better on a golf course?

If you're smoking a butt today, Tim, you definitely have time for at least nine holes!  Great thing about Lazy Q - golf fits in nicely with it! ;) 8)

Very true. I definitely had time to chase the little white ball around a big grassy field but my  usual buddies all had other engagements. I did make it to the range to hit a bucket. Of course the beer tastes good from anywhere but I get a better quality beverage from my fridge than from the roving drink cart :)

After the investment of the smoker, I've spent much more feeding family, friends and neighbors.  My wife keeps telling me that throwing parties aren't cheap.  ;D
