Chip Screen Benefits?

I want to use a combination of chunks and chips for a standard 225 cook.
I don't know if/what benefits a chip screen would provide.

What is the purpose of a chip screen?
What happens when you don't use a chip screen for chips (and chip/chunk combo)?
Why do I want a chip screen?

Thanks.

I don’t have a Chip screen but the purpose is to make the holes in the wood box smaller. I think it also helps a bit so the chips don’t burn as fast. I think.

I just use foil when I use chips, poke a few holes in the foil to help with air flow. I know others use the chip screen so hopefully they offer a bit of info.

I never had a chip screen with my #2 and used both chunks and chips with no problem.  I always keep a double layer of foil in my smoke box with smaller holes punched in it, so maybe that's why I never had a problem.  My 3DW came with the screen so I leave it in the smoke box, but I still do the foil layer and still don't know what value, if any, the chip screen ever provides.  If I were to use pellets in the smoke box then I could see the screen keeping those from falling through the holes.
