It was delicious! I did have one minor mishap during the smoke: I use a Maverick 732 thermometer and it was reading the smoker temp at about 340.  A little frustrating since I just got the thermometer and obviously there's no way my smoker could run that hot so I just assumed it was malfunctioning. The meat probe appeared to be working fine so I just left it alone as I'm a believer in not opening the smoker until it's done. When I went to pull the bird out I discovered that the probe had slipped off the rack to the bottom of the unit and was resting right next to the heating element. I felt like a bit of a dumb ass but the bird was great so all's well that ends well. I'll be more diligent next time.

Tim, you don't need to monitor box temp anyways, which is good since your box temp probe is likely toast.  If it got too close to the element, it probably broke the bulb inside.  No harm, just trust the SI to maintain temp like it does.

Thanks Tony and I'm sure you're right. Probe is probably toast. Oh well. I'd rather sacrifice the probe than put out a bad meal. Mishaps just make us stronger...and give us something to laugh about

You could plug in the probe to the Maverick in your house and see what temp you get.  If it is close to actual room temperature, then perhaps your probe will be OK.

Those probes are good to mid 500° mark if I do recall correctly. Easily enough found through Google.

Theoretically, yes.   We've had several folks comment about their probes dropping onto the smoke box, and coming up with dead probes.  If the lab specs were only the "real world" reality, we'd all be getting 40 MPG in our cars!

I'm happy to report that my maverick appears to have weathered the storm and is working just fine as I'm smoking my boston butt today. I didn't have it clipped on the rack correctly but figured that out so no permanent damage.
