Are any woods toxic

Whilst there is loads of discussion here on the various woods and their associated effects/flavors I've always wondered if any woods create toxic smoke an should clearly be avoided?

Not knowing where you live, but 1/2 hr east of me there are lots of Orchards.  Last year when I got my smoker I thought I would get some Apple, Cherry and Peach wood as the old growth trees were being removed and I spoke to the old boy there and asked if I could have a few pieces and I wanted to smoke with them.  He told me not to as some of his trees have been sprayed for 20 to 30 years with chemicals.  I found a apple tree not far from me that the winter snow broke the fork in tree off and this was in a back yard of a house and the owner said he never sprayed it at all.  This was free so I have 20 lbs of apple wood now.

That's any interesting point. How would you know if a tree had been sprayed?
