I used Fruita wood the 1st time i purchased wood for my #2. I need more wood and was wanting some mesquite and more hickory, it seems fruita wood is out of stock on the mesquite plus price is $59 for 30 lb mix, i was thinking i paid $40ish the last time. Also would like some bourbon barrel wood. Any recommendations on another good wood supplier?
Thx dave

Many of us have been using smokilicious for wood (http://www.smokinlicious.com/index.php?home), but I don't believe they offer mesquite.

You might also want to try Maine Grilling Woods (http://www.mainegrillingwoods.com/).  They do offer mesquite.

I strongly recommend Smokinlicious. Their wood is far superior to the other stuff I have tried. Sadly no Mesquite though.

Maine Grilling Woods is pretty good stuff. When you order, tell em you need your wood cut to "cookshack" size and they will come to you at the perfect size..............

Sorry Scott, but I have to agree with Gregg...  MGW is good, but smokinlicious has them beat, hands down.  Just wish they had mesquite. :(

Thanks for the wood suggestion, I ordered some Smokinlicious today, no Mesquite or Apple, go figure, but a little Mesquite goes a long way too ;-)

Smokinlicious woods are locally sourced from Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania, so the selection is limited. But because of that, the quality is fantastic. Order what you can from smokinlicious first, then fill in the gaps for the species you can't get, from other sources.

This was just posted by another user (kz0m). DM Tony says bourbon barrel wood often is very dry by the time it is cut up, so you should soak in a sealed container, with a wet rag in an open plastic bag (rag not in direct contact with the wood) re-wetting the rag regularly for a week to rehydrate. Vacuum seal after rehydrating.

I have found, on eBay, an awesome place to get oak, not just any oak, it comes from the used barrels of Kentucky bourbon, and stills smells like it!
You get about 80 pieces that are 1-1.5 oz each, $18 & free shipping. That's about enough wood for about 30-40 smokes.  Anyway, the eBay site is 111073541725 if anyone wants to take a look, I've purchased two and I smell the bourbon from the wood in my garage where I have it stored ;-)

Almost all my wood comes from neighbors, friends and friends of friends fruit / nut trees.  The more you pass the word, the more that finds you.  I have a co-worker that visits family in the mid-west frequently and he now brings me a box of fresh hickory from every visit.  My sister in Texas has a small pecan orchard.  A fishing buddy has some property that has mesquite covering half of the 10 acres. One of my friends from church has several sugar maple trees.  It isn't hard to get all the wood one could possibly want by just doing a little networking.

If you have any distilleries or wineries around sometimes they sell their old barrel chunks. I have a moonshine distillery that I get great apple wood barrel chunks.

I want to thank this group and especially Kari for turning me on to Smokinlicious as a wood source!  My order arrived today, I'm finishing up three chickens with cherry/hickory mix with a 9 lb shoulder to follow with sugar maple as the wood.  In a word, WOW, this is awesome wood!  They give you a post card size list of the wood in the box and its moisture content for each species.  The cherry has the least moisture at 20.7% and the hickory the most with 27.2%.  the chunks are 4+ oz each so I'm able to hatchet them down to the size I need.  And, I actually know what this group means by "blue smoke" as I finally witnessed that this evening, along with my first "belch" inside the smoker.  Anyway, this wood will last a while but am super satisfied with this wood purchase!  Thanks again for all the info!
