An experiment!

While cooking my 5 lbs of chicken wings and a bloomin bologna, I decided to see if the drip pan was really necessary. Well, it does seem to be of actual benefit as I now have oiled my slate porch w chicken fat. >:(. Coulda been worse, like 2 packer briskets for 15 hours of drippings ;D

Hey George,

The drip pan is needed, but it is amazing sometimes when very little is in the pan. While I could use the drip pan that comes with the unit, I use throw away foil pans.

I buy 30 or 40 for six bucks and sometime get several uses out of each pan. For me it is just something less to clean, not needed, but..... just me.

Fully understand George!  Here in KY, we refer to this as "Oldtimers Disease"....no matter how gray your hair is or isn't!!  ;)  Bottom line though....I'll bet you won't make that "oversight" again!  :)

I can fully understand this mistake, but the one I worry about is 15 minutes into the smoke and I scratch my head wondering if I punched a hole in the foil on the bottom of the smoker to let the dripping run out!  ::)

Yall seem to misunderstand :) - my 'experiment' was a monumental oversight! :-[

Hehe.  Yeah, I missed it, until your second post!  I've seen so much, on here, it wouldn't have surprised me if it was intentional! ;)  On about my 2nd or 3rd smoke, in my #1, I got up at about 2am to put it on, an forgot to punch a hole in the foil for the drain/air hole!  I realized it, about 20 minutes in.  Let me tell you, getting that hole punched in a hot smoker was no small feat!  Surprised I didn't end up in the ER! :o  Never made that mistake again!!

Just got our #3 Friday.  Didn't have time to "play" like I wanted but did get it seasoned.  I'll make sure to learn from y'alls experiments.  Got a good chuckle out of you old timers.

Welcome, Burt!  Congrats!

Now that you're here, head over to the Introductions section and tell us about yourself (rather than tagging onto an old thread).  Come in Loud and Proud, with a new thread of your own! :D  Go ahead and add a town to your signature line, since we know your name already!

Getting it seasoned is the first hurdle, now go smoke something! ;)
