Tip - Don't plug the probes in backwards
« on: April 17, 2014, 09:14:47 PM »
Did a dumb thing today.  Doing a Boston Butt and was rushed getting it setup.  Plugged probes in backwards.  Lets just say by the time I noticed it the one probe had the -H- error on it and the smoker was running at full power yet since it was sensing the Chamber temp as the Meat internal temp.  I can confirm that the smoker was 375F or higher at the time I noticed this.   :'(

There went my slow 225F cook out the window...

Ouch!  Definitely a good tip!  Sorry about your slow smoke. :(

Surprisingly the Butt turned out great.   ;D
I must have caught it in time, but I'll certainly be double checking my setup from now on...

I should add that I had hard-wired a bypass of the stock Temp Probe / Dial, which is why the temp got much hotter due to my mix up on the probes for the Auber.  Certainly re-thinking that or at minimum added a switch for when I really want higher temps like others have done.

Maybe we should color-code our plugs, and put the same color by the plug on the unit.  Simple, visual reference?  At the least the butt wasn't a burnt offering! :D

Holy crap.

I just did the same thing Sunday. Toasted my probe as it went to H as well.

I am thinking of coding them with tape and such like divot suggested.  Man I was frazzled. All turned out well but it only took about 30 min to zap my probe.  Glad I didn't leave my house!,!,

What are the odds, Steve??  2 in one week?  Wow.  No telling how high that sucker would have gone if you weren't there!  Lucky you caught it quick.  A probe is cheaper than a new smoker, or new garage!
