Leftover Wood From Old Smoker on Model 3?
« on: July 08, 2017, 04:04:43 PM »
I'm considering buying a Model 3, and I have a ton of Bradley wood bisquettes left over from my previous smoker.  Is it safe to use these in a Model 3 before switching over to the wood chunks?  Do I need to use the chip screen to prevent issues with the heating element?

i don't see how they could cause an issue.. there are holes in the bottom of the smoke box but you can put them over a solid area.. how big are they? they may burn faster than a solid chunk of wood.. if i had them i would try them.. but i would probably mix them with solid pieces.

you could also wrap them on the bottom side with foil.

Thanks for the suggestions.  They're roughly two inches in diameter by half an inch thick, and I definitely think they'd burn a lot faster than the solid chunks.  I don't think I'd want to count on them as a primary source of smoke since they're a lot less efficient than the solid chunks are, but I like your idea of potentially mixing them in (with or without foil).

I think I'll hold off on using them for at least the first couple of smokes.  I think I'd feel better establishing a baseline for myself on the Model 3 so I can make a more informed decision on whether it's worth an experiment.  If I end up trying it and learn anything interesting, I'll let you guys know.

It should work OK. And I can understand not wanting to waste them.  After you get the 3, give it a shot!

Be sure and give Smokinlicious a try.  I was using the bone dry, bagged wood at first.  I'm glad I switched.

I am coming from a bradley smoker and I would like to use them too. I love the Jim beam Barrel wood that Bradley has. And I have a brand new 120 puck pack. And I couple other partial 120 packs of various wood. I have not pulled the trigger yet on the SI but hoping to soon. Please update on how it worked.

I also would be interested to see how they worked out.  So far, nothing.  Not sure the OP got around to purchasing the smoker.  But then again, maybe he did and is just to busy smoking and eating!

Well then When I get mine I will give it a shot. I love the Jim Beam barrels. They have been my secret weapon. But I have found a place where I can get Actual Whiskey barrels. That may be my fall back.

I'm a 100% sure that the biscuits will smoke.  The big question will be is it the best smoke for the price of the meat you have in the box.  I'd suggest smoking a cut of meat with the biscuits and then shortly after repeating the smoke with some real wood chunks.

Ok I put 2 pucks in with my smoke today on the chip tray as I have not gotten my wood yet. And did not want to waste what I have left after the seasoning. As I may need them for the ribs this weekend if it does not get here. :D

Did the pucks 'produce' sitting upon the chip screen?

I can tell you a small amount. I put these in with chips. Not blocks. When I left to go to the dealer The smoke was rolling out. When I shit it off. I had some chips and the pucks were black and about 3/4 burnt I would say. Now total time was about 1.5 hrs I was gone for about 1hr. Not sure what happend while I was gone. I will try a smoke with just the pucks at some point.
