Is the 3d pid water proof?
« on: May 24, 2016, 03:18:39 PM »
Newbie here and writing my first post.  Recently purchased a 3d and want to auto tune it today.  Looks like we may get a rain shower or two throughout the day.  I will be using it on my uncovered deck and was wondering if the pid can get wet.  Not sure what the IP rating is for it or if it even has an IP rating.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Jon, I can't give you an "official" answer, but I would only consider the 3D to be water "resistant". Since I have a covered patio, I've not had to be concerned with rain, but it is an electric appliance and proper care should be taken to avoid conditions that would otherwise be dangerous. "Waterproof" is a rather tough feature for a product to achieve, so I'd plan accordingly and try to avoid too much H2O. Good luck and happy smoking!

P.S.   I've been smoking on my 3D now for almost 5 months and have never auto-tuned it. Since it works fine, I don't see the need. If it aint broke, don't fix it:-)

I agree on the auto tune, Steve said the D models do not need to be auto tune.

Well....definitely a yes, and no, on that.  It's not something you need to do, right out of the box, for sure.  The vast majority of owners are satisfied with the factory settings for each smoker.  However, if you are having any issues with the controller holding steady temps, it's not a bad idea.  Environmental factors (heat/humidity) can have an effect on how fast the smoker heats and cools, as can other factors.  Bottom line?  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!  But, if you're not happy with how tight the temps are holding, try an autotune using the instructions in the Auber Instructions section.  Just write down the current P, I and D settings, in case you want to revert back.

Thanks for all the feedback.  Guess I'll just give it a go with my first smoke and see how it holds the temps.  If not satisfied I will auto tune.  I use three auber pid's for my home brewery and once auto tuned they are amazing.  Hope I get the same results with the smoker.  I'm kind of a techno geek so anything outside of a degree will make me want to tinker with it even though it's probably unnecessary.
