Can you use a piece of chunk charcoal in the fire box?

I have heard that you can but I haven't had much luck.  So far I've just tried it twice but either I didn't get it burning enough before I started or there's not enough air to keep it going.  I've read about people doing this with various electric smokers to get a smoke ring but it may be that the Smokin-It units are sealed too tight.

Anyone else care to chime in either way?

It's my understanding that, rather than using lump charcoal, a crumbled charcoal briquette does the job.  I haven't tried it myself so I'm only relating rumor and innuendo ...

I've never tried it either (really have no desire at this point) but I've heard this is what you need to do also.
