Puzzling Smoke with swings

I smoked a single rack of ribs today and my Auber initially went past my program temp by 12 degrees.  The temp then dropped 12 degrees below my set temp and locked in, holding that temp.  It didn't matter what I did to the temp setting as far as making adjustments, it just held 223 and wouldn't budge.  I let the smoker cool down and going to try doing another auto tune.
