Title: How tall is your cart?
Post by: jpowell on July 10, 2017, 10:18:41 PM
Got the itch to make a cart for my 3D, so used some 2x4's and made a prototype. It's too tall though (34") after looking at how high I'd have to lift meat to get it to the upper rack slots.  So, I'm wondering how tall your carts are?

If my math is good, to the top of the controller, you are a couple inches proud of 5 feet. Maybe a height of 4 or 4 1/2 feet would be ideal for you?  Depends of course on your height and what is comfortable for you.

My plan at the moment is to drop it a good 12" which I think would make wrestling a big floppy brisket off the rack easier and more natural.  I'm 5'11".

On brisket and butts, I pull the entire rack out and place on a large jelly roll pan for transport into the house.

Just found some specs for the 3/3D cart...

 25” deep
 24” wide with shelves folded
 42” wide with both shelves open
 22½” height overall
 Will raise smoker 21”

The specs for the 2/2D say it also raises the smoker 21" and that has worked really well for me.  I just measured and it's 45.5" to the top of my #2.

Hadn't thought much about taking the whole rack out ... hmmmm.
Thanks for those dimensions LarryD.
I'm currently at 4'11" to the top of my 3D which puts the rack I normally use at 4'3"

I do not need mine to roll around, so I just put it on cinder blocks. I have four 8X8X16 with 2 each 8X8 on top of each and I don't use the casters of course. It is a real nice height for me.

There you go again David, sharing those outstanding ideas! Thanks

Well, I never got around to lowering my cart and it's actually not been a problem at all :-)
I forgot about this post until I stumbled on my design sketches tonight.
For anyone interested here's my uber simple design you can make quick and easy.
Just used regular 2x4's.
29" x 8 ... 4 of these for the legs and 4 for the horizonals
22" x 2 ... lower supports
I'd like to eventually cover the frame with some thin weatherproof material since it does sometimes see rain and it does look a little ghetto.

Opps. Meant to include a pic of me with it for height reference. I'm 5'11"
