Title: Model 3.5
Post by: Glock_21 on January 30, 2017, 01:28:42 PM
I saw a Facebook post about a new Model 3.5.

It's supposed to bridge the gap between the 3 and 4.

Tony, how long has this one been on your patio? ;)

In August of last year, this was posted on the main site. Besides the 3.5 look for a model 5 in the future.

I am sure that is going to appeal to a lot of folks.

Very interesting. Lots of money, though. If I am going to spend that much, I think I'd just go with the 4D.

But, I can see where this one will appeal to a large enough audience to make it a decent seller.

Someone needs to mention to the webmaster that the 3.5D description is incorrectly the same as the 3D...

The description looks significantly different to me unless I am missing something:
Smoker model #3.5D has the capacity to hold 60 pounds;A triple latch door system; 1300-watt heating element with LED indicator light, 11 amps 120-volt single phase
Inside dimensions are 15" W x 22" D x 28" H;Outside dimensions are 17" W x 28" D x 33"H

Smoker model #3D has the capacity to hold 45 pounds;A double latch door system; 1200-watt heating element with LED indicator light, 10 amps 120-volt single phase
Inside dimensions are 15" W x 22" D x 20" H;Outside dimensions are 17" W x 28" D x 25" H

I read the same stats as Larry. Its the 42 pounds of meat. The dimensions appear to be correct but for an average viewer it would be confusing.

Might require some explanation on how one could buy a whole additional 3 for the price of the extra .5.

Call me brain dead. Missed that.  I went straight to the details.

And you cant put on a cart as per the site.   Good point on almost double price for analog vs digital 3.5

Sorry about the confusion on the short description.  I fixed the issue now.  Also since the casters and posts are different than the rest of the models, it won't fit on the Smokin-It carts and stands.

Thanks

This is a great point.

I am not sure I would be willing to pay an extra $465 over a #3D for just 8" more of height, when for $1,065 more than a #3D I could have almost 4" more of width and 15" more of height with a #4D.

Some more stats:

VOLUME
#3D - 6,600
#3.5D - 9,240
#4D - 14,341

STEEL - I don't know a whole lot about the different grades of steel, but noticed this as a difference
#3D & #3.5D - 18 gauge, 201 stainless steel
#4D - 18 gauge, 304 stainless steel

I am guessing that there are going to be some people who this size is just perfect for. But, I do agree that it seems like a pretty steep price increase over the #3D and even more when you compare against the analog #3 at $534.99.

Regardless it is great to see Steve pushing the envelope and bringing new products to the market.

I believe that you are forgetting that shipping is not included on the 3D.  As the 3.5D is larger and heavier it is freight only, so we made it free shipping.  Add in the shipping to the 3D there is probably less than a $300 difference.  We have been looking at shipping differences and how they factor into the buying decision.  I will take this to Steve and see if we can make it more apparent what the "true" cost difference is.

Thanks for the info!

Great explanation Ben. The 3.5 looks like a bargain to me. One only needs to look at the offerings from Cookshack and SmokinTex to get a good idea of the value Steve offers.

Thanks for this information. I had no idea that the shipping was unique for the #3.5D and the #4D. This is pretty confusing to have some of them have free shipping and others not, so was easy to miss.

This does make the value comparison make more sense, though.

So, a revised comparison of prices would be something like this (based on the shipping rate of $124.20 to ND):

#3 - $659.20
#3D - $859.20 which is $200 over the #3
#3.5D - $1,199.99 which is still $349.79 over the #3D, but a lot better than $465
#4D - 1,799.99 which is $600 over the #4D

Getting closer but still didn't make complete sense being that the top, bottom and controller are constants.  Maybe $25 for a slightly bigger element and a $100 in SS for the sides in my mind.

The 3.5Ds are selling like hot cakes!  Great "happy medium" between the 3 & 4.  Another 8" of height is a LOT more room, and fills the gap for those who love the 3, but just don't need the cavernous space of the 4.  Seems to be a winner, so far!
