Need some help
« on: September 18, 2017, 01:09:35 PM »
My legacy auber 1503 crapped out yesterday. Does not turn on.  I want to purchase a new one, should I buy the wsd 1501 gph or something different? I have a smokin it #3. Would you also recommend a permanent probe?

I would stick with what you are comfortable with so the 1501 should do you well.  Have you taken your your old one apart to see if a repair is possible?

I think that there was a discussion in the past regarding replacing a fuse. Have you considered that.

I might be mistaken but I think the probe plug ends are different between the two units.

I bought a new 1501 with the wall mounted probe.

Hopefully this will allow for better performance.

Struggled the last couple of smokes with the probes.

Any advice on installing the probe?

It's a biotch! Buy the best drill bits you can find.  Start small and work your way up, use lots of oil.  A lot of guys bought their back wall spacer at Lowes or Home Depot.  I made my own.

So when i drill, i go from inside the back panel to inside the smoker? I would think thats the way to get the most leverage since elbow grease is required.

I had a difficult time with the smoker in a vertical position, so, I laid mine down (used a couple 2 x 4 sleepers) so that I could apply a little more pressure.  I also used a punch to dimple my start point so that the drill bit didn't want to walk all over the place.

Going to get the materials tonight. 5/16 cobalt drill bit and the spacer.

Suffered long enought with the dangling probe.

With the cobalt drill bit, took about 2 minutes to complete the hole.
